Building a Hydroponic Farm
Getting the Materials
I needed to plan before buying materials to make sure I had a clear list of everything I needed, avoid wasting money, and ensure the success of my small PVC hydroponic farm project.
To build this project I needed:
Threaded rod
Pvc pipes- 4 90°, 2 straight 12”
Pvc primer and glue
Tote box
LED/grow lights
1/2” vinyl tube
A water pump
2 small brackets
Zip ties
Construction
Then it was time for the hard part. Assembly. I had a rough idea of what I wanted the farm to look like in my head, but since it was the first time I had ever done something like this I wasn’t too confident it would work out.
I decided that I needed a strong and sound base for the farm to stand on, especially in a busy environment like a dorm room. I drilled holes into the metal triangle brackets so that the threaded rods would fit nicely. I cut all of the PVC pipes to the measurements I needed and then cut out holes where the plants will grow out of.
I primed and glued it together to make it air tight so no water would be leaking out from the pipes. Then, I set the water pump up in the bottom container and tested out how strong the water pressure was going to be. The water level was just about an inch which was perfect for what I wanted.
Finally, I zip tied the LED lights to help the plants grow in my dorm. It was a long process that took about 7 hours with the research, buying and building the farm but it was well worth it.
